For you to grasp why we commemorate Bonfire Night, then you must be informed of the history.

The night dates back to fifth year of the seventeenth century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a gathering of Catholic revolutionaries decided to take action against the King dissenting the oppression of the Catholic church.

Going by the authority of King James 1, Catholics was attacked. This occurred due to the fact that the monarchy preferred Protestants. A group of catholic men reacted by blowing up the Houses of parliament.

The weapon to be used for the devastation were containers of gunpowder set underneath the assembly. They were to be detonated while the king and other office bearers were in parliament.

The bombing was set for 5th November in 1605. The machinators anticipated to execute the ruler in the action and other renowned figures within the building blamed for persecuting Catholics.

The planned assault was unsuccessful since the police found out about the plan before Guy Fawkes could blow up the gunpowder.

It is alleged that the failure of the Gunpowder Plot arose from disagreement among the people involved. A section of the planners grew disturbed with the plot because the damage it would have caused, and one of the plotters informed the rulers by sending an anonymous note.

That evening, those loyal to the Monarchy rejoiced the botched scheme and his well-being by starting bonfires and exploding fireworks. From that time, it grew to be a habitual event that has come down generations.

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a recognition of the ineffective undertaking by Catholic extremists to kill the monarch and other monarchy agents in 1605. The night also serves as a reminder of the perils faced by statesmen.

You should note that Bonfire Night isn’t a recognized public holiday. It is closer to a custom honored by protestants more than Catholics whose followers were responsible for the plan.
