The planned devastation was unsuccessful after state officials discovered the plot before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder. 

It is asserted that the defeat of the Gunpowder Plot was due to misunderstanding among the people involved. Some were uneasy with the method as a result of the devastation it would have caused, and one of the plotters cautioned the rulers by sending an unacknowledged note. 

That night, those faithful to the Monarch jubilated the failed strategy and his well-being by starting bonfires and lighting fireworks. From then, it grew to be a regular function that has come down generations.    

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a tribute of the botched endeavor by Catholic zealots to do away with the king and other government officers in 1605. The night in addition serves as a pointer of the danger faced by rulers.
