For you to understand the rationale why celebrate Bonfire Night, then you must know the bygone days.

The night can be traced to early 17th Century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a crew of Catholic revolutionaries went against the Monarchy challenging the injustice against Catholics.

In keeping with the reign of King James 1, Catholics came under fire. This unfolded because the king preferred Protestants. A group of catholic men reciprocated by leveling the Houses of parliament.

The material to be used for the attack were casks of gunpowder set underneath the assembly. They were to be ignited the moment the king and other office holders were in parliament.

The assault was expected on 5th November in 1605. The connivers intended to slay the king in the act including other famous officers inside the house culpable of tormenting the Catholic church.

The planned action was ineffective after law officers learned of the scheme before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder.

It’s claimed that the flopping of the Gunpowder Plot arose from squabbles between the planners. Certain plotters became disturbed with the strategy due to the devastation it would have wrought, and one of the conspirators warned the monarchy by sending an unacknowledged letter.

The very same night, those loyal to the Monarch toasted to the botched plan and his welfare by lighting bonfires and exploding fireworks. From that time, it became a frequent affair that has entertained lots of generations.

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a memory of the ineffective undertaking by Catholic radical elements to murder the king and other state representatives in 1605. The evening also serves as a pointer of the hazards faced by statesmen.

You should not forget that Bonfire Night isn’t a formal public holiday. It is more of a ceremony honored by protestants more than Catholics whose followers were responsible for the scheme.
