The celebration dates back to 1605 to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a crew of Catholic extremists took action against the Monarch in protest against the mistreatment of Catholics.

Going by the leadership of King James 1, Catholics came under attack. The reason was because the king supported Protestants. A few Catholic men retaliated by flattening the Houses of parliament.

The contraption to be used for the bombing were casks of gunpowder located underneath the building. They were to be lit when the king and other office holders were within parliament.

The assault was set for 5th November in 1605. The people behind the plot desired to murder the king in the process in addition to other leading officials in the house behind the mistreatment of the Catholic faithful.

The scheduled devastation failed because law enforcement became aware of the ploy before Guy Fawkes could blast off the gunpowder.

It is rumored that the non-success of the Gunpowder Plot was as a result of misunderstanding among the conspirators. A section of the planners were uncomfortable with the approach due to the damage it would have wrought, and one of them notified the authority by sending an unsigned letter.

The same evening, those loyal to the Monarch rejoiced the unsuccessful scheme and his safety by starting bonfires and setting off fireworks. Since then, it became a regular occasion that has been passed down the generations.

Bonfire Night is observed as a tribute of the ineffective effort by Catholic conspirators to assassinate the king and other monarchy agents in 1605. The night additionally acts as an indication of the hazards faced by politicians.

You should not forget that Bonfire Night isn’t a recognized public holiday. It’s more of a custom commemorated by protestants more than Catholics whose followers were responsible for the scheme.
