For you to grasp the rationale why observe Bonfire Night, then you are supposed to be aware of the bygone days.

The evening dates back to early 17th Century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, certain Catholic fanatics decided to take action against the King dissenting the oppression of Catholics.

In line with the rule of King James 1, Catholics came under fire. The reason was due to the fact that the monarchy was in favor of Protestants. A group of catholic men revenged by detonating the Houses of parliament.

The contraption to be used for the devastation were kegs of gunpowder put beneath the assembly. They were to be lit when the king and other officials were in parliament.

The assault was expected on 5th November in 1605. The connivers expected to slay the monarch in the process plus other noted statesmen within the structure blamed for persecuting the Catholic church.

The expected action was botched because state officials became aware of the scheme before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder.

It is claimed that the defeat of the Gunpowder Plot was as a result of disagreement between the conspirators. Some grew uneasy with the plan considering the destruction it would have wrought, and one of the conspirators forewarned the monarchy by sending an unsigned note.

The same evening, those dedicated to the Monarchy rejoiced the failed conspiracy and his safety by starting bonfires and blasting fireworks. Since then, it turned out to be a habitual affair that has seen many generations.

Bonfire Night is celebrated as a recognition of the unsuccessful effort by Catholic radical elements to kill the king and other state agents in 1605. The evening in addition is a warning of the danger faced by statesmen.

You should note that Bonfire Night isn’t a legal public holiday. It’s more like a practice remembered by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the plot.
