For you to know why we commemorate Bonfire Night, then you are supposed to be informed of the history.

The day dates back to early 17th Century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, certain Catholic revolutionaries decided to take action against the King challenging the persecution of the Catholic church.

In accordance to the reign of King James 1, Catholics was assailed. The justification for this was given that the king favored Protestants. A few Catholic men revenged by flattening the Houses of parliament.

The instrument to be used for the assault were casks of gunpowder placed underneath the structures. They were to be exploded while the king and other office holders were within parliament.

The assault was set for 5th November in 1605. The people behind the plot expected to assassinate the king in the process and other popular figures within the building guilty of oppressing Catholics.

The anticipated deed aborted after state officials unearthed the plot before Guy Fawkes could light the gunpowder.

It is alleged that the collapse of the Gunpowder Plot was as a result of disagreement among the people involved. A few grew uncomfortable with the approach as a result of the destruction it would have wrought, and one of the plotters informed the authority by sending an anonymous letter.

The very same night, those dedicated to the Monarchy jubilated the failed scheme and his well-being by lighting bonfires and lighting fireworks. From then, it turned out to be a regular function that has entertained lots of generations.

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a tribute of the failed effort by Catholic zealots to kill the king and other sovereign agents in 1605. The evening also serves as an indication of the hazards faced by politicians.

You should keep in mind that Bonfire Night is not an official public holiday. It’s more of a custom remembered by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the conspiracy.
