Going by the reign of King James 1, the Catholic Church came under attack. This unfolded because the monarch endorsed Protestants. A few Catholic men countered by blowing up the Houses of parliament.

The instrument to be used for the devastation were kegs of gunpowder set beneath the house. They were to be detonated once the king and other noblemen were in parliament.

The assault was set for 5th November in 1605. The schemers expected to assassinate the king in the process including other famous officials inside the parliament culpable of tormenting Catholics.

The scheduled assault was ineffective because law enforcement learned of the scheme before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder.

It is rumored that the non-success of the Gunpowder Plot was caused by misunderstanding between the planners. A few became uneasy with the approach because the losses it would have wrought, and one of the conspirators cautioned the monarchy by sending an unsigned note.

The very same evening, those loyal to the Monarch celebrated the failed conspiracy and his welfare by starting bonfires and lighting fireworks. Since then, it evolved into a regular occasion that has seen many generations.

Bonfire Night is celebrated as a memory of the failed attempt by Catholic conspirators to do away with the monarch and other sovereign representatives in 1605. The evening in addition remains a reminder of the perils faced by rulers.

You should remember that Bonfire Night is not a formal public holiday. It’s closer to a ceremony commemorated by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the plot.
