The expected action was unsuccessful since state officials unearthed the conspiracy before Guy Fawkes could light the gunpowder. 

It is alleged that the collapse of the Gunpowder Plot was caused by disagreement among the schemers. Some became uncomfortable with the plot considering the destruction it would have caused, and one of them notified the monarchy by sending an unsigned letter. 

That night, those loyal to the Monarchy toasted to the botched strategy and his safety by starting bonfires and blasting fireworks. From that time, it grew to be a frequent affair that has entertained lots of generations.    

Bonfire Night is celebrated as a memory of the botched undertaking by Catholic radical elements to assassinate the king and other monarchy representatives in 1605. The night also is a reminder of the danger faced by leaders.
