For you to identify with story behind the reason we memorialise Bonfire Night, then you are supposed to know the past.

The day can be traced to 1605 to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, some Catholic zealots rebelled against the Monarch disapproving the oppression of Catholics.

In keeping with the jurisdiction of King James 1, the Catholic religion came under attack. The justification for this was because the king supported Protestants. Some Catholic men revenged by bombing the Houses of parliament.

The instrument to be used for the attack were containers of gunpowder put underneath the assembly. They were to be lit once the king and other officials were in the confines of parliament.

The offensive was set for 5th November in 1605. The conspirers expected to execute the king in the melee and other noted statesmen within the structure responsible for persecuting the Catholic faithful.

The expected action aborted because law officers became aware of the plot before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder.

It is asserted that the collapse of the Gunpowder Plot was due to differences among the people involved. Some grew apprehensive with the strategy because the destruction it would have wrought, and one of the conspirators warned the rulers by sending an anonymous note.

The very same night, those loyal to the Monarchy toasted to the unsuccessful conspiracy and his safety by starting bonfires and blasting fireworks. From then, it became a habitual affair that has entertained lots of generations.

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a memory of the botched attempt by Catholic radical elements to do away with the monarch and other state representatives in 1605. The evening also remains a reminder of the risks faced by leaders.

You should keep in mind that Bonfire Night isn’t a recognized public holiday. It is more like a tradition commemorated by protestants more than Catholics whose adherents were responsible for the conspiracy.
