For you to grasp the reason why people observe Bonfire Night, then you are supposed to learn the the yesteryears.

The day dates back to 1605 to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a group of Catholic revolutionaries went against the Crown disapproving the injustice against the Catholic church.

In line with the command of King James 1, the Catholic Church was attacked. The reason was on account of the fact that the king supported Protestants. A group of catholic men decided to retaliate by leveling the Houses of parliament.

The device to be used for the deed were containers of gunpowder put under the structures. They were to be detonated when the king and other representatives were in the confines of parliament.

The offensive was expected on 5th November in 1605. The people behind the plot expected to kill the king in the action and other leading figures in the building blamed for persecuting the Catholic faithful.

The expected devastation did not go through as expected when state officials became aware of the plot before Guy Fawkes could light the gunpowder.

It is opined that the flopping of the Gunpowder Plot was caused by squabbles among the conspirators. A section of the planners became uncomfortable with the plan due to the damage it would have caused, and one of them notified the rulers by sending an unacknowledged letter.

The same evening, those devoted to the Monarchy rejoiced the unsuccessful plot and his welfare by lighting bonfires and lighting fireworks. Since then, it became a regular function that has come down generations.

Bonfire Night is observed as a recognition of the unsuccessful endeavor by Catholic fanatics to slay the monarch and other state officers in 1605. The evening also remains a pointer of the perils faced by rulers.

You should note that Bonfire Night isn’t a formal public holiday. It is more of a custom celebrated by protestants more than Catholics whose followers were responsible for the conspiracy.
