The evening dates back to early 17th Century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, certain Catholic extremists rose against the Monarch dissenting the oppression of Catholics.

In accordance to the leadership of King James 1, Catholics came under attack. The justification for this was on account of the fact that the king favored Protestants. A few Catholic men revenged by leveling the Houses of parliament.

The device to be used for the deed were drums of gunpowder located beneath the building. They were to be sparked while the king and other office holders were within parliament.

The assault was planned for 5th November in 1605. The machinators expected to assassinate the monarch in the action and other renowned figures inside the house culpable of tormenting Catholics.

The scheduled deed was botched when the police learned of the ploy before Guy Fawkes could blast off the gunpowder.

It is rumored that the flopping of the Gunpowder Plot was caused by falling out between the planners. A section of the planners became uneasy with the plan considering the damage it would have brought, and one of them warned the rulers by sending an unsigned letter.

That evening, those faithful to the King jubilated the failed conspiracy and his safety by lighting bonfires and lighting fireworks. From then, it turned out to be a regular event that has seen many generations.

Bonfire Night is observed as a remembrance of the ineffective endeavor by Catholic conspirators to do away with the king and other sovereign agents in 1605. The evening also functions as a pointer of the perils faced by leaders.

You should remember that Bonfire Night is not a recognized public holiday. It’s closer to a tradition commemorated by protestants more than Catholics whose followers were responsible for the scheme.
