Going by the reign of King James 1, the Catholic Church was embattled. The justification for this was on account of the fact that the king preferred Protestants. A few Catholic men revenged by leveling the Houses of parliament.

The contraption to be used for the bombing were casks of gunpowder located under the building. They were to be detonated when the king and other noblemen were inside parliament.

The bombing was planned for 5th November in 1605. The connivers anticipated to execute the ruler in the act and other renowned statesmen inside the house behind the mistreatment of the Catholic church.

The planned action aborted when state officials discovered the ploy before Guy Fawkes could blast off the gunpowder.

It is claimed that the collapse of the Gunpowder Plot was due to misunderstanding between the planners. Some were uneasy with the approach due to the destruction it would have effected, and one of the conspirators warned the monarchy by sending an unsigned note.

That night, those faithful to the Monarch celebrated the botched plot and his safety by starting bonfires and exploding fireworks. From then, it grew to be a frequent event that has come down generations.

Bonfire Night is celebrated as a remembrance of the botched effort by Catholic extremists to do away with the king and other sovereign officers in 1605. The evening also acts as a pointer of the risks faced by leaders.

You should not forget that Bonfire Night is not a formal public holiday. It is more like a tradition remembered by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the conspiracy.
