Guy Fawkes Night  is commemorated each year  on November 5. It is at times known as Bonfire Night and honors the day of observance of the revelation of a plot put together by Catholic connivers to explode the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. Many people start bonfires and touch off fireworks.

For you to identify with the rationale why commemorate Bonfire Night, then you are supposed to know the history.

The day dates back to fifth year of the seventeenth century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a gathering of Catholic fanatics rebelled against the King disapproving the oppression of the Catholic church.

Going by the jurisdiction of King James 1, Catholics was embattled. That was because the monarchy favored Protestants. A group of catholic men reciprocated by blowing up the Houses of parliament.

The device to be used for the attack were casks of gunpowder placed under the building. They were to be ignited when the king and other office bearers were in parliament.

The bombing was set for 5th November in 1605. The conspirers expected to slay the ruler in the act and other popular officials in the building culpable of tormenting Catholics.

The expected attack failed since the police became aware of the conspiracy before Guy Fawkes could light the gunpowder.

It’s alleged that the failure of the Gunpowder Plot was as a result of disagreement among the people involved. A few were uneasy with the approach as a result of the devastation it would have wrought, and one of them cautioned the monarchy by sending an unsigned note.

The very same evening, those loyal to the Monarchy jubilated the unsuccessful conspiracy and his safety by lighting bonfires and blasting fireworks. From then, it grew to be a frequent affair that has come down generations.

Bonfire Night is honored as a memory of the abortive endeavor by Catholic radical elements to kill the monarch and other state agents in 1605. The evening also serves as a pointer of the danger faced by leaders.

You should remember that Bonfire Night is not a legal public holiday. It’s more like a tradition remembered by protestants more than Catholics whose adherents were responsible for the plot.
