Guy Fawkes Night  is commemorated each year  on November 5. It is also designated as Bonfire Night and recognized the day of observance of the discovery of a strategy put together by Catholic schemers to level the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. Lots of participants light bonfires and trigger fireworks.

For you to discern why we observe Bonfire Night, then you should be aware of the history.

The evening can be traced to 1605 to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a crew of Catholic extremists decided to take action against the Crown challenging the mistreatment of Catholics.

In accordance to the command of King James 1, the Catholic religion came under attack. This unfolded because the monarch endorsed Protestants. A group of catholic men countered by detonating the Houses of parliament.

The instrument to be used for the devastation were kegs of gunpowder situated under the structures. They were to be exploded while the king and other office bearers were in parliament.

The offensive was scheduled for 5th November in 1605. The people behind the plot desired to murder the monarch in the melee including other prominent officials inside the building blamed for persecuting the Catholic church.

The planned action did not go through as expected since law enforcement found out about the plan before Guy Fawkes could detonate the gunpowder.

It’s rumored that the failure of the Gunpowder Plot was caused by differences between the people involved. Certain plotters grew apprehensive with the approach because the devastation it would have brought, and one of the plotters informed the monarchy by sending an unsigned note.

That night, those dedicated to the King celebrated the failed conspiracy and his well-being by lighting bonfires and exploding fireworks. From then, it grew to be a regular event that has been passed down the generations.

Bonfire Night is observed as a recognition of the ineffective attempt by Catholic fanatics to do away with the monarch and other sovereign officers in 1605. The night in addition serves as a reminder of the risks faced by statesmen.

You should remember that Bonfire Night is not an authorized public holiday. It is more of a practice celebrated by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the plot.
