The day dates back to fifth year of the seventeenth century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a few Catholic extremists went against the Monarch dissenting the injustice against the Catholic church.

In accordance to the rule of King James 1, the Catholic Church came under fire. The reason was due to the fact that the king favored Protestants. A few Catholic men revenged by blowing up the Houses of parliament.

The material to be used for the attack were barrels of gunpowder put under the house. They were to be exploded while the king and other office holders were within parliament.

The assault was planned for 5th November in 1605. The machinators expected to kill the monarch in the act and other famous people within the house culpable of tormenting Catholics.

The planned action was ineffective because the police discovered the ploy before Guy Fawkes could blow up the gunpowder.

It is alleged that the collapse of the Gunpowder Plot was due to differences among the people involved. Some were apprehensive with the strategy as a result of the damage it would have effected, and one of them warned the rulers by sending an unacknowledged letter.

The same evening, those loyal to the King rejoiced the botched scheme and his welfare by starting bonfires and setting off fireworks. From then, it became a habitual event that has been passed down the generations.

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a recognition of the unsuccessful attempt by Catholic zealots to murder the king and other government representatives in 1605. The night also functions as a warning of the hazards faced by rulers.

You should keep in mind that Bonfire Night is not an official public holiday. It’s more like a ritual honored by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the scheme.
