Guy Fawkes Night  takes place yearly  on November 5. Many participants light bonfires and discharge fireworks.

For you to discern why we commemorate Bonfire Night, then you are supposed to know the past.

The evening goes back to 1605 to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, certain Catholic zealots went against the Crown disapproving the injustice against Catholics.

Under the rule of King James 1, Catholics came under fire. This unfolded due to the fact that the monarchy supported Protestants. A group of catholic men reacted by bombing the Houses of parliament.

The weapon to be used for the devastation were barrels of gunpowder placed underneath the house. They were to be exploded the instant the king and other office bearers were within parliament.

The offensive was scheduled for 5th November in 1605. The connivers hoped to murder the ruler in the act including other popular people in the house blamed for persecuting the Catholic faithful.

The expected deed did not go through as expected since the police found out about the plot before Guy Fawkes could blast off the gunpowder.

It’s claimed that the non-success of the Gunpowder Plot was due to squabbles between the plotters. A few were uneasy with the plot considering the losses it would have caused, and one of the plotters forewarned the authority by sending an anonymous letter.

That night, those loyal to the King celebrated the unsuccessful strategy and his safety by starting bonfires and exploding fireworks. Since then, it became a habitual function that has entertained lots of generations.

Bonfire Night is commemorated as a memory of the failed endeavor by Catholic zealots to slay the monarch and other monarchy representatives in 1605. The night also remains a pointer of the hazards faced by politicians.

You should remember that Bonfire Night is not an official public holiday. It is more of a tradition honored by protestants more than Catholics whose faithful were responsible for the plot.
