Guy Fawkes Night  is held every year  on November 5. It is occasionally labelled as Bonfire Night and honors the anniversary the exposing of a plot put in motion by Catholic schemers to bomb the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. Lots of people ignite bonfires and set off fireworks.

For you to know story behind the reason we memorialise Bonfire Night, then you must be aware of the past.

The evening originates early 17th Century to the Gunpowder Plot. That year, a group of Catholic fanatics rose against the Monarchy dissenting the oppression of Catholics.

In line with the command of King James 1, Catholics was attacked. The reason was because the king was in favor of Protestants. Some Catholic men retaliated by bombing the Houses of parliament.

The device to be used for the attack were drums of gunpowder located underneath the structures. They were to be lit when the king and other noblemen were within parliament.

The bombing was scheduled for 5th November in 1605. The people behind the plot anticipated to assassinate the king in the melee and other renowned officials in the parliament responsible for persecuting the Catholic church.

The planned action was ineffective when law officers became aware of the plot before Guy Fawkes could light the gunpowder.

It is asserted that the failure of the Gunpowder Plot was caused by squabbles among the planners. Some became uneasy with the strategy because the losses it would have caused, and one of them notified the rulers by sending an unsigned letter.

That night, those devoted to the Monarchy jubilated the aborted strategy and his safety by starting bonfires and blasting fireworks. From then, it turned out to be a habitual occasion that has seen many generations.

Bonfire Night is celebrated as a recognition of the botched undertaking by Catholic zealots to assassinate the king and other government agents in 1605. The evening also is a reminder of the hazards faced by rulers.

You should not forget that Bonfire Night isn’t a legal public holiday. It’s more of a practice remembered by protestants more than Catholics whose followers were responsible for the plot.
